From Ocean to Art:

How Bright Buoy is Building Hawai‘i’s Dive Community

Rooted in Community, Inspired by the Ocean

Diving may seem intimidating to some — deep waters, unpredictable currents, the mystery of what lies below. But for Bright Buoy founder Shannon, what she discovered beneath the surface wasn’t fear, but community — one that welcomes newcomers, shares knowledge and celebrates the ocean together.

That same passion drives Bright Buoy today — a Kailua-based company crafting dive weights and belts on island, from recycled lead. Every product is made locally, with community and the environment in mind.

"The dive community inspired everything we do," Shannon explains. "From colors to coatings to the way we design our belts, it's all about supporting the people who make this sport so special."

Made in Hawai‘i, for Hawai‘i Divers

When Shannon began researching dive gear, she noticed gaps in the market — limited colors, rough coatings that corroded suits and a lack of locally made options. So she decided to act on this.

Bright Buoy’s weights are coated in durable, ocean-inspired color that don’t damage gear or fade with use. The belts are made of 100% silicone and stainless steel, soft on the body yet strong enough to last. And most importantly, everything is manufactured right here on O‘ahu.

"Bringing manufacturing here to the island was really important to us — it's the community we're serving, and the dive community has given us so much in return," Shannon said

The Buoytique: A Space for Connection

Bright Buoy’s Kailua shop – The Buoytique – began as a co-working space for fellow divers but quickly grew into something more. It’s now a welcoming space where divers can gather between dives, share stories or learn from one another.

Especially for women divers, Shannon saw how hard it can be to find the right gear. “Why not make it a comfortable space where divers can come, touch and feel products, and just gain knowledge? There’s no pressure to buy — it’s all about connection.”

Bringing the Ocean to Life with Pictures Plus

For Shannon, every dive tells a story — not just through the marine life she encounters, but in the motion and energy of the divers themselves.

"Photography is such an important aspect of diving. It's why we keep going back out," she said. "I wanted each photo we printed to capture movement — the moment just before you hit the water, the way fins slice through it or even the interaction between divers. That energy is what makes diving feel alive."

To bring that sense of movement and color into her shop, Shannon partnered with Pictures Plus to print large, canvas photos captured by local divers and photographers.

“I sent 11 large pieces to Pictures Plus — various print formats — and they got it done in less than a week,” she said. “Everything came out beautifully — vibrant, sharp, and ready to hang.”

The result: a boutique that mirrors the motion and color of the ocean itself.

Capturing the vibrancy, motion and life of the ocean keeps her coming back, dive after dive. Now, each wall in The Buoytique tells a story: the movement of a diver preparing to descend, the shimmer of sunlight through crystal-clear water, the connection between diver and sea. “This is all art,” Shannon said. “Diving is art to us.”

A Community That Dives Deep

At the heart of Bright Buoy isn’t just a brand — it’s a reflection of Hawai‘i’s ocean community. Every belt, weight and photograph is connected by shared experiences above and beneath the surface.

As Shannon puts it:

“The dive community wraps its arms around anyone new or afraid. It’s inspiring — everyone supports one another. That’s what community is.”

And through partnerships with local makers like Pictures Plus, that community keeps growing — one handcrafted piece at a time.
