We offer 20 frame options, in any custom size up to 40” x 60”. All of our frames are wood-based, containing no plastics, metal or MDFs. Our wooden picture frame styles include modern, distressed and our best-selling Hawaiian Koa wood veneer. As the largest manufacturer of Koa veneer frames in the world, we take great pride in creating one-of-a-kind frames that celebrates this rare and unique wood species, which is indigenous to Hawaii. Browse our selection of Koa wood frames.
What is Koa Veneer, and is it sustainable?
Pictures Plus is the world’s largest manufacturer of Koa veneer frames and our selection is unmatched.
Koa, whose name means brave, bold, fearless warrior, may be the most spectacular hardwood in the world! We know of no other wood possessing such chatoyancy or range of color, which can vary from light brown to deep red hues. When polished, it can take on a catseye gemstone-like brilliance and seem as if lit from within.
As rare as it is beautiful, Koa wood is found in only one location in the world: here in the islands of Hawaii. It is illegal to cut down a Koa tree—only Koa that has fallen naturally can be harvested. This conservation protection, combined with Koa trees’ rapid growth, makes Koa an exceptionally sustainable wood. In addition to the beauty Koa wood brings to handcrafted picture frames, furniture, and custom cabinets, Koa is also a tonewood, making it an ideal exotic wood for specialty guitar and ukuleles.
In terms of its strength and weight, koa is similar to black walnut. It is a moderately heavy wood, however to achieve maximum durability in regards to our picture frames, we use a Koa veneer atop an even stronger wood backing to ensure your Koa wood frame will last a lifetime. The most beautiful grains of a Koa log are reserved for veneer, making it the best choice for picture frames and other specialty items.
Our online offering of Koa veneer frames is always expanding. We invite you to shop our current offering of Koa ready made frames, or, create a uniquely sized Koa frame with our Custom Frame Builder. Our complete collection of Koa veneer frames can be viewed at any of our store locations.

What types of mats are available online and in stores?
Through our website, we offer regular and acid-free mats to fit frames up to 40" x 60". A mat will help to protect your artwork from sticking to the glass as well as add visual appeal to your finished frame. You can choose a single or double mat. For an even larger selection of mats, visit any of our store locations throughout Hawaii. Not sure how to use a mat in your framed art? Learn more from our Design Tips.
What are Acid-Free mats and why should I consider one for my artwork?
Acid-free mats provide the greatest long term protection to your artwork. They’re more durable, fade resistant and are best for preserving framed artwork over time because they are less susceptible to decomposition. Because mat boards come directly into contact with your framed artwork, over time natural mat decomposition can cause discoloration and other damage to your artwork. We recommend acid-free mat boards for anything you might frame which requires longevity or extra protection, such as original art or any work that is of sentimental or notable monetary value.
What are my options for frame glass?
We offer a variety of glass options for your framed art, suitable for any budget and application, including regular, museum and acrylic glass with or without UV protection. Acrylic glass costs slightly more than regular glass. It is lighter, scratch-resistant and shatter-resistant. Museum glass is the most expensive glazing option. It provides unmatched clarity and protection, blocking up to 99% of UV rays. Use our Custom Frame Builder to add your preferred glazing to your frame.
Do you offer foamcore backings?
We offer industry standard regular foamcore backing for your custom or ready made framed art, as well as an acid-free backing option. All framed mirrors come with regular foamcore backing.

How do I measure my art for Pictures Plus’s Custom Frame Builder?
To measure your artwork in preparation for using our Custom Frame Builder, first flatten out your work of art so that it is facing you as you will want it displayed in a frame. Next, measure your art from its left edge to the opposite right edge, rounding up to the nearest 1/8”. This is the measurement you’ll enter into the width fields in Step 1-Image Size of the Custom Frame Builder. Then, measure from the bottom edge to the top edge, again rounding up to the nearest 1/8” to determine the height. It’s important that you enter the width and height into the correct fields. This will ensure we prepare your frame correctly when we attach hanging wire to your frame for its wall display. For example, if your image is 12” wide x 16” high, make sure to build a 12” x 16” frame, not a 16” x 12” frame, so that your image can hang as intended in the portrait orientation.
Note: If you have selected a mat, it will overlap the print by 1/8” on each side to prevent the print from falling through the opening. If you have selected no mat, the frame will overlap the print by approximately 1/4” on each side.
How do I hang my frame?
We’ll supply all the hanging hardware you’ll need to hang your framed art. All frames that are 16” x 20” or smaller will include a saw tooth hook. Simply decide on the best location for your framed art, secure the provided nail into your wall, and center the saw tooth on the nail. All frames that are larger than 16” x 20” will include a wire and hanger. You will secure your hanger onto the wall with the provided nail, and center the wire on it.
Don’t forget to snap a pic of your frame in its new home and share with us on social media!
